The American Gold Eagles were authorized under the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985, and were first released in 1986. They are legal tender with denominations of $50, $25, $10 and $5 and weight and purity guaranteed by the United States: 33.931 gm., 16.966 gm., 8.483 gm, and 3.393 gm. respectively of .9167 fine gold (net weights of exactly 1, 1/2, 1/4 and 1/10 troy oz. respectively of pure gold). By law, the gold must come from sources in the United States. The obverse design features a modern rendition of Augustus Saint-Gaudens' full length figure of Lady Liberty with flowing hair, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, as she appeared on United States Double Eagle coins from 1907 through 1933. The reverse design, by sculptor Miley Busiek, features a family of eagles. American Eagle proof coins undergo a specialized minting process, which begins by manually feeding burnished coin blanks into presses fitted with special dies. The coin is struck multiple times so the softly frosted, yet detailed images seem to float above a mirror-like field. After scrutiny by white gloved inspectors, each American Eagle gold proof coin is sealed in a protective plastic capsule and mounted in a handsome satin-lined velvet presentation case with its own official Certificate of Authenticity. This proof coin was produced at the West Point Mint, and the “W” mint mark can be found below the date. You will receive date of our choice.
