The American Eagle silver bullion coin's obverse is considered to be one of the most beautiful American coin designs, originally created by Adolph A. Weinman for the United States half dollars produced from 1916 to 1947. It features a full-length figure of Liberty in full stride, enveloped in folds of the flag, with her right hand extended and branches of laurel and oak in her left. The reverse design, by United States Mint sculptor/engraver John Mercanti, features the heraldic eagle with shield, an olive branch in the right talon and arrows in the left. This one troy oz. coin has a $1 face value and is minted from .999 fine silver. It is the largest silver coin ever issued by the United States—with a diameter of 40.6 mm.
